Looking for inspiration in the frozen food aisle — “Healthy frozen” is not an oxymoron.

We’ve all been there… standing vacantly in the freezer aisle searching top to bottom for something healthy, tasty, and easy to cook. Of course, convenience is a given with frozen foods, so what everyone’s looking for is great flavor plus a healthy ingredient list. That’s the challenge that we took on when we launched Eathos. That’s the idea behind “consciously tasty.”

History suggests that healthy frozen foods aren’t exactly culinary delights. The trade off — “clean” ingredients vs tasty flavor — often prevented people from buying anything more than once.

They tried it. Didn’t like it.

So there’s a lot of skepticism in the category. That’s why we hesitate, and linger in front of the freezer doors for so long

Twenty years ago there was no such thing as healthy frozen entrees. Back then the frozen food section of the busiest grocery stores was a barren wasteland as consumers simply quit on their father’s frozen brands and started shopping the periphery of the store, as instructed.

“Stick to the outside aisles. Steer away from anything frozen or canned.” That was the typical advice for people who were concerned about their weight or about their health.

While that perception still lingers, Eathos and several other brands are introducing a more mindful approach to frozen dinners that provides a realistic, healthy option for people who don’t have time to cook from scratch.

Meat & potatoes is giving way to ethnic vegetarian options that provide just as much protein and dramatically better flavor profiles.

In our blind taste tests people don’t believe that Eathos Ravioli is meatless or that our macaroni marinara is actually vegan. They’re asked to judge on flavor alone, and the consensus is clear… healthy frozen foods really can taste great.

Frozen foods in an age of meal hacks and subscription delivery services.

There’s been a lot of hype around the rise of meal subscription services. There’s obviously a large pool of affluent, DIY foodies who are trying Hello Fresh, Home Chef, Blue Apron and a dozen others.

But you don’t need to spend 13 bucks a person through a subscription service to get fast, healthy meals on your dinner table.

Today’s frozen entrees are like the foundation of the perfect meal kit… affordable, fast, and yes, even healthy.

Shopping in the frozen food isle

With Eathos, for instance, you can start with a deeply satisfying pasta dish like our Spiral Pasta + Pesto & Kale and easily add a salad and some bread alongside. Voila’…  You get an amazingly tasty, balanced meal that’s much easier to prepare than what you get in a subscription box.

In fact, some of the healthiest frozen meals of 2022 can be just as good for you as the typical meal kit that costs three times as much money.

There are some instances where frozen foods can actually be better for you, and better for the environment, when you buy them frozen.

Take asparagus, for example.

Asparagus spears start drying out the minute they are picked, and most are shipped from Central America. So by the time fresh spears find their way into a subscription box and then to your dinner table they could have lost as much as 50% of their moisture content. That’s why they sometimes get tough and fibrous.

When asparagus is quick frozen right out of the field, the moisture and nutrition is locked in. So if you cook them properly, you’ll have perfectly tender spears every time.

The next time you’re in the freezer section contemplating your meal plan for the week, keep that in mind. A side of frozen asparagus with a healthy frozen entrée like Eathos Potato Gnocchi + Pesto makes a great meal hack that’s ready in 5 minutes.
